Isang napakasayang gabi!

This past January, as part of my surprise birthday celebrations, I surprised my soulmate Tai by taking her to the “Backwoods Barbie Drag Show” at Hamburger Mary’s in West Hollywood. Tai has never been to a drag show in Los Angeles before. A drag show is a performance in which people dress up usually in their opposite gender and perform a song or dance in a humorous way that mocks and bends gender norms and roles. All different kinds of people attend these shows–gays, lesbians, transgendered, queers of all kinds, and even straight people come and enjoy these performances. While the performance happens, you can also order cocktails and food (this place has yummy nachos and burgers). The drag queens were so funny that night! In one skit, someone pretended to be Miss Philippines and another pretended to be Miss Colombia from the most recent Miss Universe 2015 beauty pageant. If you have seen the pageant, you will remember that the host Steve Harvey made a mistake with reading the correct winner of the title; an embarrassing event occurred in which Miss Colombia was crowned only for her crown to be literally taken back and given to Miss Philippines. This controversy shook the whole world and inspired a lot of memes in social media. That night, the drag queens re-interpreted the incident in a hilarious way. After the performance, I took a photo with both the Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia of West Hollywood or WeHo. Afterwards, Miss Philippines asked me, “Are you Pinay?” I replied enthusiastically, “Yeah!!!” What a fun night!
